There’s a lot of planning that goes into remodeling. From the brainstorming phase to financial planning to searching for the right contractor to help you realize your remodeling dream, there’s a lot of work to be done before the real work even gets started.
One such task that you may not have considered is planning for those unexpected events that could throw a wrench into the proceedings once they get underway. It’s hard to account for all of the potential things that could go wrong, but by taking some of the more likely problems, you can save yourself plenty of worrying and headaches beforehand. This week, we’ll talk about how to expect the unexpected and plan for it accordingly before you get started on your home remodeling project.
Expecting the Unexpected in Home Remodeling
Neighbors
If you live well away from neighbors then you have nothing to worry about, but otherwise it’s smart to take your neighbors into consideration, especially if you’re expecting your project to be a long affair. It may involve early morning noise, or the crew may take up parking on the street. Talk to your neighbors in advance and inform them of your plans so they can plan accordingly. If you have a neighborhood association, you may have to get your project approved through this body as well.
Scheduling
Planning your day to work with your contractor’s schedule can present some difficulties. Work this out with your contractor beforehand so you both know what to expect and can find a schedule that works for both of you.
Debris
Remodeling creates a beautiful end result, but in the meantime it creates a big mess. Dust can spread very easily in your home, which is why it’s important to partition off the area with plastic. If your project will require a dumpster, work out with your contractor beforehand on where the dumpster will be placed. If they want to put it on your driveway, establish that the contractor will be responsible for any damages.
Pets
If you have pets, you may want to make plans for them during the remodeling phase. Pets may be scared of all the noise, or they may get excited and cause a ruckus. Either way, it may be smart to ask if a family member or friend will look after your pets while the remodeling is going on.
