Use this checklist this weekend to get your outdoor living spaces ready for the fall and coming winter season.

While fall has been here for a while, the seasonal weather is finally making a consistent appearance. If you haven’t prepped your house yet for fall, now is the time. If you wait too long, the weather will have turned really cold (and possibly even truly wintery) and the holidays will be here, and you’ll still have important tasks that need to be completed. Use this fall home improvement checklist this weekend to get your outdoor living spaces ready for the fall and coming winter season.

Clean Those Gutters

Let’s be honest, no one likes this job, but it is an extremely important home maintenance task. Gutters that are full of leaves and other debris can overflow during storms, causing water damage to your home and outdoor spaces. Or they may become heavy and fall down, sometimes doing big damage on the way. While you’re up on the roof, look it over for signs of loose shingles that might need attention.

Check Window Seals

From the roof, move down to the windows. Check each one for cracks or holes in the seals and re-caulk as needed. This is actually an important task to do a few times a year to keep your heating and cooling costs down.

Maintain Pathways

If you have cracks in your driveway or hardscaping, they will only get worse and present bigger problems over time. Water can get into them, and the freeze-thaw action of winter can cause serious issues. Plus, cracks make it so much harder to plow or shovel. They also could present a tripping hazard to guests this holiday season, so take the time to fix them now.

Get Organized

If you’re packing up your outdoor spaces, clean and properly store all of the furniture and accessories. Any dirt or dampness left on them before they go into storage could be mold when you bring them back out in the spring. This is also a good time to clean your landscaping and gardening equipment before you store it away till next year.
