Picking the Right Material for Your New Kitchen Cabinets

Picking the Right Material for Your New Kitchen Cabinets

New cabinets can make your entire kitchen look brand new, and they make an excellent starting point for a kitchen remodel. Here are just a few popular materials for kitchen cabinets.

Upgrading your home’s kitchen cabinets is a great project for any homeowner. New cabinets can make your entire kitchen look brand new, and they make an excellent starting point for a gradual kitchen remodel. While there are many different styles and colors to choose from, there are also many different materials available for your new kitchen cabinets. Most of these materials are made from wood, but they each have a unique set of strengths and weaknesses that make them suitable for your home.

Medium-Density Fiberboard and Particleboard

Medium-density fiberboard, also known as MDF, and particleboard are wood composites that are incredibly popular for kitchen cabinets. Both materials are often made with very small particles of recycled wood products, and they are on the more affordable end of the cabinet spectrum. MDF is slightly stronger than particleboard, but both are weaker than other wood options. Particleboard is more susceptible to sagging, warping, and damage from moisture.

Plywood

Plywood is a more durable wood product that is made of multiple thin layers of wood that are glued and pressed together. Its moisture resistance, strength, and affordability make it an excellent option for cabinets. Although it is slightly more expensive than things like particleboard, plywood is often a better investment due to its durability.

Hardwood

Finally, hardwood is an incredibly durable and beautiful material that is not quite as popular as plywood due to the price. Hardwood is often the most expensive cabinet option available, but it also has one of the longest life spans due to its strength. While it does have the ability to warp, hardwood is often considered the most durable wood product for kitchen cabinets. While you may be tempted to invest in hardwood cabinets, just remember that they will be incredibly heavy and must be designed to accommodate the weight of the wood.
