4 Ways to Get Your Home Ready for Fall

It's time to ready our homes for the changing seasons!

It’s time to ready our homes for the changing seasons!

Now that we are officially in the fall, the days are getting shorter, the weather is getting cooler, and we are happily heading out to pumpkin patches in warm sweaters. But is your house ready for fall? There are many home improvement and maintenance projects you should be planning both inside and outside to get your home fall and winter ready, and now is the best time to tackle them.

Clean the Gutters

There are multiple home improvement projects you could tackle on the outside of your house, but maintaining your gutters is one of the most important tasks. No one actually likes doing it, but we need to clean out the gutters at least annually. If they’re not cleaned out or covered with guards, they get clogged with leaves and debris and overflow. Or worse, they could get so heavy they fall down. It is a relatively simple chore that can save you from big headaches in the future. While you’re up there, visually check your roof for issues, so that they can be addressed before winter.

Fix Hardscaping

As it gets colder, you won’t have the warmth and sun needed for concrete to cure, so now is the time to repair any cracks in the driveway or sidewalks. It is best to fix them now, rather than wait out the winter because the freeze-thaw action can make the cracks worse, and the cracks also make it more difficult to shovel or plow.

Prep Your Furnace and Chimney

Now is the time to get your furnace and chimney professionally serviced. If you had a professional out to look at your furnace at the end of the season in the spring, you may be able to wait on that, but if it has been more than a year, make the call. When the really cold weather hits, you’ll want a furnace that works efficiently to keep you warm. This goes for your fireplace and chimney as well.

Perform a Safety Check

Now is the time to check your home safety equipment. Replace batteries (or replace the whole units) in your smoke detectors and CO2 detectors. You want to make sure that these are working before turning on furnaces and fireplaces. Finally, check your generator (or consider purchasing one) and put together an emergency kit in case there are bad storms this winter.
