Should You Invest in a New Roof This Spring?

roof replacement

Is your roof holding out on its last legs?  There are several ways to determine whether or not your roof needs replacing.

We all know that spring is the rainy season.  That means that your roof, which is the first line of defense when it comes to weather, is in for another beating.  It’s endured the winter, meaning it’s held up to frost and snow.  But, is your roof holding out on its last legs?  There are several ways to determine whether or not your roof needs replacing.  Let’s take a look at some of the tell-tale signs that will indicate you need a new roof ASAP.

Missing or Damaged Shingles

This is, perhaps, one of the biggest and most overlooked issues regarding roofs.  Not only are missing shingles sometimes hard to spot, but they can also cause far more problems than you might think.  During rainy seasons, missing shingles will lead to water damage and leaking.  It’s much more work to repair damage from a leaky roof as opposed to replacing the roof before the damage is caused.  If you happen to spot any missing shingles, or they appear damaged or worn, have a roofing professional come out to take a look to determine whether or not you need a replacement.

Moss

Moss won’t be visible after the cold winter, but it will take a quick hold of your roof during the rainy season if the conditions are right.  Moss tends to grow where the sun doesn’t hit, and where moisture is readily available.  If you notice one part of your roof that never gets sunlight, you may want to check for moss.  Caught early, and taken care of quickly, this won’t be a problem.  But if the damage is already done, shingles will be pushed up, letting in plenty of water damage.  If your shingles have been affected by moss, determine whether or not you need a new roof.

Mold

Discoloration might not always be related to sun damage.  Sometimes, it can mean that mold has taken control of your roof.  Mold does the same thing moss does; pushes up shingles, allowing water to creep through.  But, also, it’s unsightly.  You won’t have much curb appeal if your home’s roof looks like a moldy mess.  Replacing your roof is a great way to have a fresh start.
