The tools and paint are investments you may be hesitant to make. But, home exterior painting is a necessary part of being a homeowner, and it’s not optional.

Are you thinking about repainting the exterior of your home?  This can seem like an overwhelming task; there’s so much surface to cover, most of which is above your reach.  The tools and paint are investments you may be hesitant to make.  But, home exterior painting is a necessary part of being a homeowner, and it’s not optional.  Regardless of how much it may intimidate you, we’re here to tell you exactly what you need to know before you start painting your home’s exterior.

When to Paint

The first thing to know about home exterior painting is when you should be completing it.  Siding, and the paint that it’s coated in, can last for years, so it can be deceiving how long they can actually last.  Is your paint cracked?  Blistered?  Peeling?  These are all signs that you need to repaint.  If you don’t, you’re leaving your siding vulnerable to the elements.

What Paint to Choose

There are two types of exterior paint: oil-based and latex-based paints.  Many professionals choose oil-based paint, because it’s smoother and stain-resistant, despite the fact that it dries slowly.  Latex paint also a good choice, though; it is less likely to crack, cleans well with just soap and water, and doesn’t have a strong odor that could cause health problems.  Whichever you pick, make sure you read the side label to ensure you’re applying it under the right conditions.

How to Paint

First of all, start from the top of the house.  This way, any drips can be covered up and hidden.  It’s also important that you use both a roller and a paintbrush.  Large portions can be painted with a roller, while nooks and crannies can be covered with a brush.  Another great tip is to start painting on the shady side of the house; painting in direct sunlight can cause the paint to dry too quickly, which could lead to blistering or discoloration.
