Summer is here, and with it come summer storms that dump a lot of water on your property in a short period of time. If this water is not properly diverted away from the house, it can get in through cracks in the foundation, causing all sorts of problems from flooded basements, mold, water damage, and structural issues. With this in mind, here are a few home improvement projects to consider that will keep storm water away from your house and keep you nice and dry.
How to Deal with Storm Water
Gutters are your first line of defense against storm water and water damage. In order to truly make the most of your gutters, there are a few upgrades you may need to make. Gutter guards prevent leaves and other debris from clogging the gutters, causing water to simply run off next to the house instead of away from it. In addition, you may need to extend your gutters further away from the house (at least 10 feet) in order to prevent water from accumulating close to the foundation.
Landscaping projects are another way to redirect water away from your home that utilize natural features of the land to do so. One common project is a swale. A swale is a depression that follows a ridge or slope. This slope can be created and filled with rocks and plants to imitate a stream bed, which water will naturally accumulate in when it rains. Rain gardens are another landscaping feature designed to deal with excess water by directing water into in areas of the yard that dry out quickly. Elevating the slope next to the house to drain away is another essential landscaping project for dealing with storm water.
Pervious pavement is pavement that allows water to filter through the pavement to a pebble base where it can naturally filter into the ground. With a pervious driveway, you can prevent run-off into your yard and the street. This effect can be achieved with concrete pavers, porous concrete, or specially designed asphalt.
