Aside from being a major focal point of your home, cabinetry has a huge impact on your home’s appeal and value. When it comes to a kitchen remodel, cabinetry is a big consideration and investment for your home. While there are countless options for cabinet design, color, handles, and other aesthetic aspects, it is important to consider the function as well as the form. Construction methods are a major part of cabinet choice. One of the first decisions you’ll need to make when it comes to cabinetry is between framed and frameless construction.
As the name suggests, framed cabinets consist of a solid frame that lines the top, bottom, and sides of the cabinet box. Framed cabinetry is considered a traditional style, and allows for several different styles of overlay: partial, full, and inset overlay. This determines how much of the cabinetry doors and drawers overlays the cabinet box on the outside, with inset doors being set right into the cabinet box.
Frameless cabinets, on the other hand, do not have face frames. These are sometimes referred to as “full access” or “European” style cabinets. They tend to allow more access to cabinetry as there are no edges around the inside of the cabinet opening. This also allows for larger-sized drawers–something important to consider for any kitchen remodel.
These cabinets can also be much more flexible in terms of their design. Frameless cabinetry can be made to appear traditional like framed options, or sleek and modern. When it comes to overlay, frameless cabinets are only available in “full overlay,” making for a contemporary look with lots of clean lines.
Either cabinet style is perfectly functional, so the best choice for your home is mainly up to personal taste. Just be sure to consider the cabinetry construction that would serve you best in your space!
