What You Need to Know Before You Remodel Your Basement

remodel your basement

Remodeling your basement can give your family that extra living area, which will make your home feel larger, roomier, and more welcoming.

Remodeling is always a great idea, and when it comes to your basement, you’re probably sitting on a lot of square footage you could be using.  There’s never not a need for more space.  Giving your family that extra living area is going to make your home feel larger, roomier, and more welcoming.  Depending on where your basement is, your could even have access directly to your backyard.  But, before you remodel your basement, there are some things you should know.

Is Your Basement Structure Ready?

The very structuring in your basement might not allow for remodeling as it currently stands.  You may need to do some inspecting before you’re ready to break out the hammer and nails.  Ensure that you’re checking for moisture, whether it be humidity or the result of your foundation not being properly sealed.  You should also be asking a professional to check your foundation and walls, to make sure there isn’t any insect or water damage.  It’s very likely that water will have wreaked at least some havoc on your basement, as it’s the lowest area in the house.

Beef Up Your Sump Pump

With new hardwood floors and carpet, you certainly don’t want your sump pump to back up or stop working.  It’s always a good idea to have a battery-powered option for your sump pump in case of an emergency, but this is especially true when your basement floor is no longer made of hard concrete.  It might even be a good idea to get a second pump, ensuring that all of the excess water is being drained accordingly and properly.  You don’t want any of your belongings damaged by a surprise flood!

Insulate Your Pipes

This is very easily overlooked.  Insulating your pipes can mean the difference between a dry basement, and a burst pipe.  When insulating your pipes, you want to make sure that you’re covering the ones that will be blocked once you’ve started to renovate.  For example, any pipes behind your hot water heater that will be hard to access should be covered first.  Pay close attention to this step, as you’ll have to cover up pipes for aesthetic purposes, making them much harder to access once the renovation is complete.
